Novak Djokovic, a three times winner, returns after a year away, chases his 100th career title but he has had some bad performance this year and Madrid, purely when it comes to W: l % is his worst M1000 of the gang.

Holger Rune, rejoicing by a Barcelona title, aims to build on his Indian Wells final, in front of Flavio Cobbolli or Fabian Marozan.

Thoughts on the draw

Seeded players: (1) Alexander Zverev, (3) Taylor Fritz, (7) Andrey Rune, (8) Home-Rue, (9) Medvedev Danied, (12) Ben Shelton, (13) Arthur Fils, (14) Casper Ruud, (18) Mensk, (23) Sebastian Corda,
Top seeds Alexander Zverev begins in R2 after a village, before either Roberto Bautista Agut or Jaume Munar.
Zverev’s season has been up and down. A runner at the Australian Open, but shiny in Indian Wells, Miami and Monte Carlo. He turned it through by managing the BMW Open in Munich last week, so he rolls into Madrid with some speed.
I can expect him to meet mouths, who have proven to be a real handful for seed players this season, with Medvedev his biggest scalp in Miami.
A third round with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who is undoubtedly in his best career, can also be interesting.
In the fourth round, Arthur Fils or Francisco Cerundolo would offer a test, but I think that by winning in Munich, and with the potential to become world number one now, Zverev can start playing more freely.
In the quarters, Ben Shelton or Andrey could ruffled a loom. Rublev has been spotted, and Shelton was dismantled by Zverev in the Munich finals, so the Germans got the upper hand.
The lower half is a minefield: Taylor Fritz, Sebastian Korda, Casper Ruud, Daniil Medvedev, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Holger Rune are all in this section.
A juicy Alla -American fourth round between Fritz and Kväa could happen, but Rune’s latest form indicates that he reaches the neighborhood, probably against Fritz if he is back to full condition.
Lower half
Seeded players: (2) Carlos Alcaraz, (4) Novak Djokovic, (5) Jack Draper, (6) Alex de Minaur, (10) Lorenzo Musetti, (11) Tommy Paul, (15) Grigor Dimitrov, (16) Frances Tiera, (17) Stefanos Tsitsipas, (24) Karen, (24) Karen) Denis Shapovalov, (30) Matteo Berrettini, (32) Sebastian Baez
The upper quarter of the lower half has the headline of Novak Djokovic, Jack Draper, Frances Tiefoe, Tommy Paul, Matteo Berrettini and a stacked supporting role.
Djokovic opens against either Matteo Arnaldi or a qualification. A third round tussle with Sebastian Baez or Mattia Bellucci could follow. Not easy, because we don’t know which Novak will show up.
In round four, Frances Tiefoe can rise, but his up-and-na-form is screaming for Djokovic if they were to meet, and he showed at the Laver Cup a few years ago that he can school him quite comfortably.
Jack Draper, fresh of his breakout in Indian wells, may like the conditions in Madrid, but his path to QFS is brutal, potentially including Tallon Griekspoor, Berrettini and Paul. Paul could meet Fonseca in round two, which will be one to watch.
The lower quarter has Carlos Alcaraz, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alex de Minaur, Lorenzo Musetti, Grigor Dimitrov, Denis Shapovalov and Tomas Machac, which gives serious firepower.
The money is probably on one last eight showdown between Alcaraz and Musetti. Despite a new scare in Barcelona, Alcaraz remains the man to beat if he is completely fit, so if his legs are good to walk, I like his chances. You also can’t exclude Alex de Minaur who does another deep drive, this guy may lack the fireplace of the best guys, but he is moping up if you are level is not really up to the ground, and his number this season shows that he is difficult to beat.
