Baptist Agut surpasses mouths

RBARBA

Roberto Bautista Agut went out Jaume Munar 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 in a two hour battle at Manolo Santana Stadium.

I had munia as my choice to come through and meet Zverev, given that RBA has lost 10 out of 13 matches so far in 2025. But it was the experienced veteran that started strongly and used their flat ground stretches to dictate the game in the first set.

RBA is not your typical Spanish clay courter, while munnies are not stranger to grind it on clay, and he roared back into the second set to level things up.

The decision was a test of endurance, and historically, Bautista Agut has been able to run all day. He regained his calm, tightened his service games and took advantage of Munar’s little dip in intensity.

It led to a double break, and although Munar won three straight matches from 1-5, he dropped serve for the third time in Game Nine when RBA closed the match with a flat forehand followed up by a Smash winner from the baseline to finish it.

RBA becomes the third oldest Spaniard who wins a main draw in Madrid, with only Nadal and Ferrer older than him. 5 out of 6 break points and 36 winners for Munars 29, but I think Zverev takes him apart.

Borges Busts Carrena Busta

CitizensCitizens

Nuno Borges delivered today’s match and saved a match point to defeat the local favorite Pablo Carreno Busta 6-7 (7), 7-6 (3), 6-3 in a three-hour epic.

The first set was close to, without breaks and just a breaking point (for Borges) over 43 minutes. Carreno Busta edged on 7-6 (7) in a tense tiebreak and took advantage of his heavy top spin to hold Borges in the remote.

The second set looked gloomy for Borges when he met a match point of 4-5 after failing to convert two break points earlier in the set, but the world no. 41 dug deep and held serv of 5-5 with a little coupling game.

Borges carried that momentum into tiebreak, dominated 7-6 (3) to level the match, and in the decision he seized the control with an early break to take it 6-3.

Gael Monfils struggled back to defeat the qualifier Borna Gojo in three sets and leveled the match at 6-2 in the second set before taking the decision. A good win for the Frenchman because Gojo plays well on Clay and should have beaten Shelton last week in Munich. He now meets Andrey Rublev in round two.

Qualifier Harold Mayot secured his first Masters 1000 victory when Corentin Moutet retired due to injury. Mayot was in control, leading with a set and a break, before the sudden end.

Mariano Navone sent the great serving Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in straight sets. Navone had a simple day on the service (not something he is used to), and GMP did not cause any significant damage. The Argentine faces Ben Shelton in round two.

Alexander Bublic defeated Alex Michelsen 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4) who was an impressive victory with regard to clay that rarely produces its best tennis, the adopted Kazakh dragged 3-5 in the first set and met two set points in the second but pulled off the comeback and saved the match with other-other-
