Indian Wells 2025 Day 2 Recap

Day two in Indian Wells contained more rain when the lower half of the draw completed its round of 128 matches.

Like Wednesday, a couple of matches could not be completed, with Mario Navone vs student Tien and Quentin Hales vs Pablo Carreno Busta suspended until Friday.

Of the finished matches, there is not much to discuss, with perhaps the main story that Nick Kyrgios must retire with a wrist problem when dragging Botic van de Zandschulp. Are we looking at another Sel Potro-type scenario?

Without seeds in action, each match looks essentially like a coin flip on paper, so there was a bit in the way of upsets or surprises.

Fokina is losing against McDonald is perhaps the most surprising, but Mackie comes from California (UCLA Grad) and made the final in San Diego, so he is in his garden and in shape.

From Friday, the top players come into the battle, so there is more to look forward to with several decent appearance matches on the schedule. Full results, select Highlights and Friday’s matches below.

CRYGIOS is retiring in the middle of the match

Kyrgio's wristKyrgio's wrist

Nick Kyrgio’s return to Indian Wells ended in disappointment on Thursday when he was forced to retire from his opening round match against Botic van de Zandschulp.

The Dutch led 7-6 (7), 3-0 when Kyrgios could no longer continue due to a right wrist injury and sent Van de Zandschulp to a second round of five times tournament Novak Djokovic.

I had seen some clips of Kyrgios that grabbed the wrist during training earlier this week, so retirement was not a surprise. Since he underwent surgery in September 2023 due to a full crime of the scapholun Ligament, he has been absent from the tour, and apart from his match in Brisbane, where I thought he looked good, his season has not looked too promising.

I was not so sure I could play today, to be honest. Two days ago in practice I had to quit because I felt pain in the wrist. I thought I could still take the court, but it was only getting worse … I began to feel sharp pain in my wrist. This process has been one of the biggest challenges of my life. For my tennis career, it is by far the biggest. The amount of work I put in, just to still have so much discomfort in the wrist … that’s why I got a little emotional in the end. This is one of my favorite tournaments. After the Australian Open, all I did was rehabilitate, train and try to get ready for this event. I was two days out, had a fantastic training session and literally at the second last point, I met a forehand and felt a sharp pain. I had to stop playing. We go back to the board as a team and try to find out a way to get through these matches. I would have loved to end that match, even though I dropped, just like a building block. But if I’m not even done with matches, it’s a problem. Kyrgios on their injury.

Fonseca Folier Fearnley

blowblow

The establishment hype train has been given Joao Fonseca as their new pin-up, and he has been the city’s conversation so far this season.

It is somewhat motivated considering his victory in Buenos Aires, and he fully used a joke sign in the event and overcame a strict opening challenge from Jacob Fearnley to assert his virgin GDP Pariba’s open victory.

The Brazilian prevailed 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 in a topsy-Turvy battle, rally from 1-3 down in the final set to roll away five straight games and secure its second ATP Masters 1000 match win.

Fonseca started strong, but Fearnley, who has also moved up the ranking this season, responded with a five-game line in the second set. He then broke early in the third; It looked like the tide had turned to his advantage.

However, Fonseca refused to back down. A costly double error at 3-3 handed over Brazilian a break back, and another unthinkable error due to a missed volley of 3-4, 40/4.0 gave Fonseca the decisive edge.

It was a big debut. It was very difficult to play here. It was windy, and I think it’s the biggest court I’ve been playing so far. I’m really excited about how I played today. I stayed focused even when I was a breakdown in the third, and I am happy with how I struggled. Fonseca on its winnings.
