Cedric Teuchert scored a goal with an assist when St. Louis City took up his first victory in the season and extended misery from the defending champion Los Angeles Galaxy with a 3-0 victory on Sunday in Carson, Calif.
Marcel Hartel and Simon Becher also scored for St. Louis City (1-0-2, 5 points), which found the back of the net for the first time this season after opening with a couple of speechless draws. Roman Burki made eight rescues for his third clean sheet in three matches.
St. Louis City is the 11th team in MLS history that does not allow a goal during their first three league matches during one season.
The Galaxy not only dropped all three MLS games this season, they are 0-4-0 when counting a Concacaf Champions Cup loss last week to Costa Ricas CS Herediano. LA is the first team in the MLS story that starts a title defense with three consecutive league losses.
Novak Micovic made two rescues for Galaxy (0-3-0, 0 points), which have given up seven total goals in their three MLS defeats so far this season, while doing once.
The LA crime went early on the attack. Galaxy’s Marco Reus hit the right post after a deflection from Burki, with Harbor Miller’s shot on rebound that crossed the cross beam.
The Galaxy Christian Ramirez had a point -based shot in the 34th minute that was again saved by Burki.
St. Louis City took a lead at 1-0 just before half time when Micovic failed to handle a corner park from Hartel and Teuchert cleaned a loose ball in front of the goal.
Just four minutes into the second half, Hartel delivered his own point in the transition to the upper left corner of the goal from an assist from Teuchert.
Again, the galaxy only missed to score a goal in the 83rd minute when Gabriel Pec’s shot from far outside the penalty area went just over the cross beam. St. Louis City counteracted immediately when Becher made in the transition less than a minute later by a lead from Kyle Hiebert.
