Medvedev flies past Paul

Daniil Medvedev gathered one of his most impressive gains for a while and delivered a dominant performance against Tommy Paul on Tuesday evening at the BDP Paribas Open and cruised to 6-4, 6-0 victory.
The Russians had to handle a four hour rain delay and took to the court in their tights and under the sweater to handle cooler conditions. But he started in red hot form and won the first four matches in the match.
Paul was able to strike back and play some aggressive tennis, but after planning at 4-4 he was broken when he served to stay in the set.
From there, Medvedev took full control and rolled away six straight games to bag the 10th seed that could not find a way through him from the baseline and finally made 31 unmatched errors.
Medvedev will next meet Arthur Fils in the last eight. The Frenchman also handled some rain delays before leaving another home favorite, Marcos Giron, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
We have actually had up and down matches as far as we have played. The first was really close, then he hit me easily and now I managed to beat him a little easier. I am happy with my game. It’s not easy to play here. Breaks of Serve – of course we still win more serving than we lose – but quarries of serving do not mean much here. So even when he came back in the first I was like: “Try to press, try to go further.” I managed to raise my level during the match, so I’m pretty happy about it. Medvedev on his victory over Paul.
Rune ends tsitsipas drive

Stefano’s Tsitsipas was one of my dark horses for the Indian Wells title, but Holger Rune had other ideas and took out the Greek 6-4, 6-4.
Like Medvedev, it was one of his best performances for a while, and he played aggressively to dominate in most areas of the court.
I had not realized before the match, but Rune led H2H 3-0, so he likes the matchup, and it showed last night when he maintained his perfect record.
Tsitsipas has looked like Bunnsolid since Dubai, but he had few answers. While playing well at the beginning of both sets and saved a couple of break points, when his ground stretches lost cards, Rune took responsibility.
The Danen also does a very good job of returning his serve, which limits him to only 57% points that won, compared to 71% at his delivery.
I also believe that slow, heavier conditions made the Greek game less effective, especially on the serve + 1 type, because his serve did not penetrate, and Rune could charge on the returns.
After serving his 16th career’s top 10 victory and first in outdoor courts, Rune will meet Griekspoor in the quarter finals after he defeated Yosuke Watanuki.
I think it was an extremely good match from my side from start to finish, ”Rune said. “I stayed very committed to my game plan and mentally I was very good. I think it made the difference, how composed I could start. Since Stef is back in shape, I think it is fair to say. It was a cool battle. Tweener is the first thing to check when I check my phone. It was better than I expected. I think my return was very good and I focused on my court position because when you give Stef too much space in advance he is very dangerous. I had to really take control of the point. I have had good success toward him the past but it did not mean it would [happen again]. I really took responsibility for the point and was really involved in my game. Rune on his win.
Other matches

Tallon Griekspoor advanced to his first Masters 1000 quarter finals by defeating the Japanese qualifier Yosuke Watanuki. The first set was a narrow battle, with Griekspoor who lined it in a tiebreak, 7-6 (4). After a rain delay, the Dutch dominated the second set 6-1, as Watanuki’s energy seemed to decline.
France’s 20th seed, Arthur Fils, overcame the local favorite Marcos Giron in a three-set battle. Fils is run through the first set 6-2 and utilizes his powerful serving and aggressive games to overwhelm Giron early. Giron, a thousand oaks, native of California, has run a wave of support after upset Casper Ruud earlier this week and fought back in the second set and won 6-2 when Fils struggled to maintain their rhythm. The decisive set was closely questioned, but the files regained control and broke Giron’s serves to secure a 6-3 victory after 2 hours and 15 minutes.
