The Ottawa senators opened a lead with three goals and then held a furious Detroit rally to defeat the host Red Wings 4-3 on Thursday evening.
Thomas Chabot, Tim Stutzle, David Perron and Michael Amadio made for the Senators (38-28-5, 81 points). Linus Ullmark made 31 rescues when Ottawa, which leads to the eastern Wild-Card Race conference, won the season series 3-1.
Lucas Raymond had a goal and an assist for Detroit (33-33-6, 72 points), which is three points from the East’s second wild card. Patrick Kane and Vladimir Tarasenko also scored, while Alex Lyon and Cam Talbot combined for 28 rescues.
Detroit had 16 shots on goal during the first period but was still dragged by two goals after it ended.
The senators killed an early punishment against Fabian Zetterlund and then did when he came out of the box. Zetterlund put up Chabot, which lifted a shot from the track that avoids Lyon’s right shoulder.
Ottawa killed two more penalties for the first 11 minutes and then scored 2-0 on Stutzle’s goal at 13:01. He went into the Detroit zone along the left side and hit Lyon on the short side.
The senators killed a David Perron sentence later during the period. The red wings got a fifth power play during the period with 40 seconds left when Tyler Kleven was called to stumble. It was transferred to the second period but the red wings still could not break through.
Seconds later, Perron made 3-0 against his former club. After a Detroit turnover in the neutral zone, the platform was discontinued with a break and beat Lyon on the glove. Lyon was then drawn in favor of Talbot.
The Senators got their first two power plays during the second period, but the points did not change.
Detroit got its sixth power play with 15:21 left in the game. It finally ended Ullmark’s shutdown bid, when Kane made an Alex Debrincat flow.
Amadio made a 2-for -0-break at 8:41 for a 4-1 senators.
Raymond made it a two-goal game again when he got a Marco Kasper feed of 11:50. Tarasenko scored from the track at 15:30 by a JT Compher pass.
