Pete Alonso-who almost left New York as a free agent during the winter-home in his first homemade in the season to drive METS to a 5-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday afternoon.
Mets improved to 42-22 all the time in home openers, including 12-5 since Citi Field opened in 2009. The Blue Jays had its winning line with four games.
Alonso probably seemed to leave Mets on several points during the season-separated January 25, when the owner Steve Cohen called the negotiations “exhausting” and “worse” than those with free agent Juan Soto, who signed a 15-year agreement worth $ 765 million in December.
But Alonso and the team agreed on February 12 to a two-year agreement worth $ 54 million with an opt-out after this season. On Friday, Alonso received a lightning ovation under introductions of first names before he hit a two-run just beyond the right field wall outside Kevin Gausman (1-1) in the first inning.
Alonso, whose 229 Homers is 23 shy for Darryl Strawberry’s Franchise record, came out of Dugout for a curtain call and raised the arms to the sales mass at 43,945.
Alonso also took into Mets’ three-run sixth against a trio of Blue Jays jugs. After Francisco Lindor went to Chase Gausman, Soto ripped an RBI double against Mason Fluharty and Alonso intentionally went before Brandon Nimmo added another run double. Starling Marte followed by lifting a victim fly from Jacob Barnes.
Soto, who also received a warm reception during the introduction of foreplay, was 1-for-4 with a stolen base in his mens home debut.
Tylor Megill (2-0) got the victory after allowing two hits and three walks while knocking out four over 5 1/3 rounds. Reed Garrett, AJ Minter and Max Kranick finished the combined four-hitter.
George runs and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Had two hits per piece for Blue Jays.
Gausman gave up three runs on two hits and two walks while he knocked out no one over 5 1/3 rounds. It was only the fifth time in the 292 career start that Gausman does not have whiffed a batter.
