New York Yankees signed the veteran’s right-wing trader Adam Ottavino to a large league contract on Monday, days after appointing the 39-year-old for assignment.
The team added Ottavino to the 25-man list and chose LHP Brent Headrick to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Yankees Dfa’d Ottavino to make room for RHP Devin William’s return from the paternity list. Ottavino declined a minor league assignment and became a free agent, which led to Monday’s signing.
Economic conditions were not released. He is expected to join the Detroit team on Monday when Yankees begins a series of three games against Tigers.
Ottavino has appeared in two matches in relief for New York this season and knocked out two in 1 1/3 rounds.
Ottavino, who looked up for Yankees from 2019-20, spent the last three seasons with the Crosstown Mets. He is 41-43 with a 3.49 era and 46 rescues in 726 career games (three starts) with St. Louis Cardinals (2010), Colorado Rockies (2012-18), Yankees, Red Sox (2021) and Mets.
Headrick, 27, has appeared in four matches (zero starts) this season. He has given up no runs and a hit while he knocked out nine in 5 1/3 rounds.
