First round leader Justin Rose of England maintained the top spot through his second round of the masters by shooting 1-under-pair 70 on Friday at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, GA.

Rose is 8 down for the tournament and completed his round with a one-shot edge on Bryson Duchambeau, which still had five holes to play. Rose had four birds and three bogeys.

DECHAMBeau, which takes advantage of a Bunker shot that resulted in a birdie on No. 4, played the front nine in 4 under.

South Korea’s Sungjae IM reached 6 under for the tournament through 14 holes before recording a bogey at Nos. 15 and 16.

Matt McCarty noted four consecutive birds (no. 6-9) on the way to 67 as one of the second round’s early finishes. McCarty, in the champions for the first time, had a horrible start at 3 through two holes. Even with a bogey on the last hole he is at 5 during the tournament.

Rose finished 16 holes before the defending champion Scottie Scheffler began his round. Scheffler started the day three strokes behind Rose among a group in second place and had a birdie on the second hole.
