Hours before San Francisco Giants continued its best start since 2003 at Yankee Stadium, manager Bob Melvin made set -up changes by moving Mike Yastrzemski up to the leadership site and changing Lamonte Wade Jr. From leadoff to sixth.
The move worked for Giants, who will try to maintain their strong start on Saturday afternoon when they visit it suddenly the New York Yankees struggles.
At 10-3, Giants is to its best 13-game start since the 2003 team screwed out to a 13-1 record and won 15 of their first 17 races. Giants used Wade for nine matches on Leadoff but he beat .125, while Yastrzemski hit well while he struck lower in the lineup.
On Friday, Yastrzemski triggered a five-run first round with a double at the game’s first pitch and beats 0.343 in total. Wade snapped a 0-for-17-glid with a two-run double after Jung Hoo Lee hit a three-run Homer in the frame.
“We are trying to remain consistent,” Melvin said before Friday’s 9-1-Rol, called for six rounds due to rain. “We have obviously won some games and have a good flow to our range. Lamonte struggles just a little for him, and Yaz turns well. When you have someone as hot as him you want to try to get him up there. He has led before, so he is used to it.”
Yankees lost for the fourth time in five matches on Friday and collected only two hits, including an RBI double by Austin Wells. New York has received 11 runs in the last five games and has a Homer in these matches after meeting 25 in its first eight.
New York is also struggling on the hill too late, and even with Max Fried’s Dominant Seven Innings on Wednesday in Detroit, its starters have an MLB worst 5.46 era. On Friday, Marcus Stroman allowed five runs while he got two outs in a 46-plant excursion and was then sent to X-rays on his left knee.
“We have to do better,” said New York Manager Aaron Boone. “Of course we will be a good start with Max, but we have fought to this point. There are 13 matches in, but, night in and night out, beat a little better to put ourselves in a good situation. We will continue to work on it.”
Stroman’s short start led to Yankees using four shippers (Ryan Yarbrough, Ian Hamilton, Tim Hill and Yoendry’s Gomez), although the game that was stopped after six rounds saved them from burning through their bull.
The right hand Will Warren (0-0, 6.00 era) will start on Saturday after experiencing mixed results in their first two excursions. After allowing two runs in five rounds against Arizona Diamondbacks on April 1, Warren gave four runs and six hits in four rounds Sunday versus Pittsburgh Pirates.
Warren has never met the giants.
The right-hander Jordan Hicks (1-0, 2.38 era) is scheduled to take the pile Saturday for San Francisco.
Hicks beat six speechless ins in a 7-2 victory on March 31 at Houston and then allowed three runs and six hits, including Homers to Seatles Julio Rodriguez and Cal Raleigh, in 5 1/3 rounds during a Sunday without decision. Giants won 5-4.
Hicks is 0-1 with a 3.27 era in six career appearance to Yankees. In his only start to New York, Hick’s five runs (four earned) allowed seven hits in 5 1/3 rounds in a 6-2 loss in May 31 in San Francisco.
