Scottie Scheffler woke up on Sunday with a realistic chance to come from behind and win another champion. When it was out of the picture, he had no problems taking a supportive role in Rory Mcilroy’s big day.
As last year’s champion at Augusta National, Scheffler made the award to help Mcilroy into the long -awaited green jacket in Butler Cabin.
“At that moment, as if it were such a emotional day for him, I just tried to stay out of the way and basically get on the jacket without embarrassing him or myself,” Scheffler told reporters Tuesday before this week’s RBC Heritage in Hilton Head Island, SC
Scheffler described McIlroy as “a good friend”, and the duo has been combined to control the PGA tour in recent years. Scheffler remains number 1 player in the official world golling, a perch that once belonged to Mcilroy, who won four majors between 2011 and 2014 before an almost 11-year drought.
So the two have perspectives in common that few others could relate to.
“It was really cool for me to be able to see because I have – I do not have the understanding of what it is like to be asked about my career Grand Slam, but I have a little understanding of what it is like to be asked,” Hi, you have achieved this, but you have not achieved it, “Scheffler said.”
“It was cool to be able to see Rory get the job done. Definitely from the outside it looked much more like relief than anything. Rory has achieved everything in the game Golf, and it was really the last for him to achieve. The guy has won the FedEx Cup, the players, all four majors. Maybe the only other would be the Olympics.”
Scheffler’s last round 69 brought him from 5 under to 8 during for the week to finish in fourth place. He talked about how he and Caddy Ted Scott felt they were in the mix up to the 18th hole, with Mcilroy struggling behind them and the Englishman Justin just rose two shots forward.
“I sit there on 18 fairways last week, and Rosie was 10 o’clock. I think for myself:” I go by this diocese. I will try holes this, “Scheffler said.” And then he (Birdie does at 18), and you are like, “Well, the tournament is over. I lost.” Don’t win, lost, whatever. “
“I looked at Teddy, and I am,” okay, teddy, I guess I will aim for the center of the green now. “He’s like,” Yes, aim for the center of the green.
Scheffler, 28, gave his usual answer when asked about Mcilroy’s win inspired to him.
“Was it pretty amazing to see Rory win the Grand Slam? Of course it was,” he said. “But as far as my life goes, I’m trying to stay in the present. So right now I’m focused on this week, and when I get home next week I will prepare for my next tournament.
“At the end of the day, my motivation is everything internally. Was it really cool to see him accomplish it? Yes, of course. To win the career Grand Slam, I think it’s something that all golfers would dream about, but at the end of the day I just try to get the most out of myself.”
Scheffler’s current list of performance includes a dominant season 2024 with victories at Masters, Players Championship, Tour Championship and four other signature events, including RBC Heritage.
Tired from his Masters victory, and with his first child because of every day, Scheffler came to South Carolina and shot 19 during the pair-bent of a second round 63-to win the tournament with three strokes over Sahith Theegala.
But now Scheffler Winless 2025 is more than three months into the season.
“Last year I came here pretty tired from the past week, and I did a good job of handling myself and how I got around the golf course,” Scheffler said. “Definitely will reflect on how I played and hit the ball last year here when it comes to getting ready for this week’s event.”
