San Diego Padres Staff Ace Yu Darvish paused the preparations for the coming season and may not be available for his first season start.

Padre’s manager Mike Shildt said the question for Darvish is “general fatigue.”

The time of the break can make the injured list an option for Padres, which meets Atlanta Braves at home on March 27 to start the 2025 season.

“He experiences a certain general fatigue,” Shildt said on Monday. “We just support him a little. We evaluate his schedule. He has been in a good place, got his four rounds, got his pitch to a good place. Just want to be smart to enter a long season.”

If Darvish is worn into the back of the rotation to start the season, Padres would not need a fifth start until a home game 31 against Cleveland Guardians. Darvish was San Diego’s opening day start last season when he took Haugen in a March 20 match against Los Angeles Dodgers in Seoul, South Korea.

The right dealer Michael King was announced as Padre’s opening day start this season.

Darvish has made two Cactus League starts this spring and goes 1-0 with a 4.05 era in 6 2/3 rounds. He went on 2/3 rounds in a March 8 start against Guardians, then four rounds in a March 13 went out against Kansas City Royals, while threw 54 seats.

Darvish made only 16 starts in 2024 as he went through the tenderness of the elbow, along with problems with hip and neck. He was 7-3 with a 3.31 era in 81 2/3 rounds and was solid in the playoffs when he went 1-1 with a 1.98 era in two starts of a possible series loss for Dodgers.

During 12 Major League seasons, Darvish is 110-88 with a 3.58 era in 282 starts for Texas Rangers (2012-2017), Dodgers (2017), Chicago Cubs (2018-20) and Padres. The five times All-Star was a runner in the American League Cy Young Award who voted in 2013.
