Early in its mating as the engine in the Chicago Bea crime, Quarterback Caleb Williams feels a strong connection to the first year’s head coach Ben Johnson.

Williams, who played for Lincoln Riley at Oklahoma and followed him to USC, starts his first full season in the NFL in Get-To-Know mode with Johnson, the former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator hired in January.

“I have a condition to be able to tell when I vibe with someone, join someone,” Williams Tuesday said at a break in Halas Hall, where the bears were convened for voluntary workouts. “It was a pretty like feeling like when I met Lincoln (Riley) five years ago, which is crazy to say. A very similar feeling.”

No. 1 election in the 2024 NFL draft, Williams had several gaming calls and head coach-thomas brown as Interim’s head coach after Matt Eberflus was fired in November-in his debut season. General Manager Ryan Poles received approval from ownership and team president Kevin Warren to make an unbroken pitch and financial offer to Johnson, which becomes a first time head coach because of his offensive mind and development of quarterbacks.

Williams said that the tests and challenges – completely literally – started with Johnson on Monday and continued Tuesday morning.

“Today we had our first quiz as a QB room,” Williams said with a laugh. “Ben went into the morning, threw up the door, made a big entrance and then we got to work with him who tested us on what we talked about yesterday. Already tested us. Everyone loves a challenge. It’s one of the amazing things about the sport. Every day is a challenge.”
