Ninth-seeded Indiana received 10 straight points during the first quarter and 13 in a row along the route to earn a 78-62 upset by the eighth-seeded Oregon in the Big Ten tournament second round Thursday in Indianapolis.
Yarden Garzon Pacade Hoosiers (19-11) with 18 points that included 4-7-shooting in 3-points. Shay Ciezki published 17 points, Chloe Moore-Mcneil made 13 and Sydney Parish added 10 to drive Indiana for Friday’s first quarter final against top seeds Southern California.
Indiana quickly jumped forward in front of a party mass at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Ciezki received 11 points, including three 3 points, to bet Hoosiers to 23-11 lead after a quarter.
Peyton Scott noted 16 points, eight returns and four assists for Ducks (19-11) while Ehis Etute added 14 points from the bench. Scott beat the Halftime number with a 17-foot baseline jumper who pulled the ducks within 40-30 at the break.
Oregon came as close as 53-48 late in the third quarter and climbed within 63-55 at Scott’s Pullup with 6:15 to go. That’s when Indiana rolled away 13 straight to pull away.
Michigan 66, Washington 58
The Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Year Olivia Olson scored nine of her 21 points during a 13-0 third quarterly driving to lift the fifth seeded Wolverines to a second round victory over the 12-read Huskies.
Wolverines’ spree-triggered by an Olson arrangement and covered by Olson’s spinning run for a three-point game-transformed a deficit of 39-36 into a lead of 49-39 when Huskies went six minutes and 10 property without points.
Freshman Syla Swords contributed 15 points and Jordan Hobbs added 11 points with six returns and four assists for Michigan (21-9), which meets fourth-seeded Maryland in Friday’s second quarter final.
Dalayah Daniels delivered a gaming high 22 points and 10 returns for Washington (19-13). Elle Ladine published 14 of her 16 points after half time, but finished 7-for-20 from the field. Washington entered the game ranked eighth nationally in 3-point accuracy of 37.7 percent, but Michigan limited Huskies to 4-AV-18 shooting from long range.
