The Toronto Blue Jays Outfieder Daulton Varsho will start the season on the injured list as he continues his recovery from the right shoulder operation in September last year.
Toronto Manager John Schneider said Saturday that Varsho needs more time for his rotator cuff to heal.
Blue Jays want Varsho available to play midfield and he is not yet ready from a throwing aspect. He won his first gold glove last season.
The 28-year-old has served as an appointed Hitter during spring training and beats .250 with four homers and nine RBI in 32 bats.
“If he were to be active and break the camp, we would have shot for outdoor plays at the beginning of this week and did not get there,” Schneider said. “With that said, he makes lots of progress with the throw and we have a very specific plan that is stated for him to hopefully join us as fast as he can.”
“If it looks every day in the middle, good. If it looks like a couple of days on and off and he knows DH, good. I love the adjustments he did, but with how it affects everyone else on the guard list right now, it didn’t make sense to keep him like a primary DH for probably a couple of weeks.”
Varsho had 18 homers and 58 RBI last season but only hit .214 in 136 matches.
During five Big League seasons, Varsho has a .225 Career Average with 79 Homers and 240 RBI over 577 matches with Arizona Diamondbacks (2020-22) and Blue Jays (2023-24).
