Toronto Blue Jays placed Max Scherzer on the 15-day injured list Sunday, one day after the veteran right hand lasted only three rounds in his debut with the team.
Scherzer, 40, allowed two solo homers in the first round and three hits in total before leaving Toronto’s loss of 9-5 to Baltimore Orioles on Saturday due to right thumb inflammation.
The three times the Cy Young Award winner agreed on a one-year contract in one year, $ 15.5 million with Blue Jays in January after going 2-4 with a 3.95 era last season with Texas Rangers. It marked the smallest victories in Scherzer’s career since his rookie year in 2008.
Scherzer is 216-112 with a 3.16 era in his career. He is ranked number two among active jugs and 11th all the time with 3,408 strikes. He is also second among active jugs in victories, rounds (2,881) and games started (458).
Justin Verlander, his former teammate, is a leader in each category.
Scherzer got the Cy Young Awards with Detroit Tigers 2013 and Washington National 2016 and 2017. He won the World Series with National 2019 and with Rangers 2023.
On Sunday, Blue Jay’s left-hander Easton Lucas also recalled from Triple-A Buffalo.
Toronto also chose the contract with Mason Fluharty and appointed his colleague Left Hander Richard Lovelady for assignment.
Lucas, 28, is 1-0 with a 9.82 era in 14 career facilities with athletics, tigers and blue Jays.
Fluharty, 23, had a 1.29 era in eight matches during spring training. He has not yet made his Major League debut.
Lovelady, 29, fell to 0-1 with a 21.60 ere on the young season after allowing four earned runs on two hits in 1 2/3 rounds on Saturday.
