After losing the last two games in a Western swing, Milwaukee Brewers will look back behind left-hander Tyler Alexander when they return home to open a three-game series against Detroit Tigers on Monday.
Alexander (1-0, 2.84 era) will oppose the leftist Tarik Skubal (1-2, 3.78), the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner.
Milwaukee lost in Arizona, 5-2, on Sunday and got only 5 1/3 rounds from Starter Freddy Peralta. William Contreras had a two-run Homer in the first round for Brewers, who failed to make the rest of the way. Milwaukee pitchers also went seven and hit a batter.
“When you have the lead against two of the best jugs in the game, you expect to win the victory,” Peralta said. “But sometimes things happen. Bullpen couldn’t end it, unfortunately, yesterday and today.
“Something I can tell you that we can probably be better off this. We will meet many good teams forward.”
Detroit lost 5-1 at Minnesota on Sunday, handled only five hits and went 0-for-4 with runners in points mode. After being swept in its first series of the season, Tigers has won four series in a row.
Spencer Torkelson was 3-for-10 with two homers, four RBI and four runs made in the three matches versus the twins.
“He is in the middle of the range for a reason,” said Tiger’s manager Aj Hinch after Sunday’s game. “He has earned his way back to it. Just keep getting good places to meet helps the good results, and he certainly does it now.”
After losing their first two starts, Skubal threw six speechless inings of four-hit ball in a 5-0 victory over the New York Yankees on Tuesday, knocked out six and went no one.
Skubal has met the breweries only once in their career, which allows a run in 6 2/3 rounds to win the victory last season in a 10-2 victory.
The breweries lost 5-4 Saturday when Diamondbacks gathered with five runs in ninth and limited Milwaukee’s Bullpen option on Sunday.
Jackson Chourio went Hitless in five bats Sunday against Arizona and snapped his 14-game strip. After knocking out five times in the season opener, Chourio leads the breweries with five homers, six doubles and 17 RBI.
Brice Turang has been Brewers most consistent hits, Batting .333 with three homers and 10 RBI. Veteran Christian Yelich continues to fight and only beats .143 with 16 strikes in 56 bats, and Rhys Hoskins only strikes .171 without a homer.
Alexander will make his fifth look and third start. In his earlier start, he allowed two runs on six hits in 3 2/3 rounds, but did not get the decision in an 17-2 victory at Colorado on Wednesday.
Alexander is 0-0 with a 2.00 era in two career appearance, including a start, against Detroit, both came last season when he was with Rays.
Even with the short excursion on Sunday, Brewer’s starters have allowed two runs or fewer in seven consecutive excursions and 11 of the last 12 matches.
