Boston Bruin’s defender Charlie McAvoy is treated for an infection and a “significant injury” on his right shoulder and remained at a Boston hospital on Wednesday morning.
McAvoy received the injury in Team USA’s first match in 4 Nations Face-off against Finland last Thursday and was initially treated by Team Medical Staff.
He was a central figure in Team USA’s 3-1 victory over Team Canada on Saturday. The 27-year-old delivered a teeth-screaming check on Team Canadas Connor McDavid who set the tone in the victory.
But in a statement issued on Wednesday morning, Bruin’s chief physician said Dr. Peter Asnis that McAvoy reported increased pain after the team returned from the playground in Montreal and was evaluated by Boston’s medical staff.
“After undergoing X-rays, MRI and blood work, he was diagnosed to have an infection in his right shoulder, as well as a significant damage to his AC joint,” Asnis said. “He underwent an irrigation and debridement procedure at Massachusetts General Hospital on February 18. He remains at the hospital, where he is treated with IV antibiotics, and his condition improves.”

McAvoy had already been excluded from the 4 Nations final on Thursday between Team USA and Team Canada. He is replaced on the guard list by Vancouver Canucks Captain Quinn Hughes.
McAvoy missed seven games in January with an upper body injury and returned to action on January 30. He had left shoulder operation in 2022.
