Lane Hutson from the Montreal Canadiens is the odds of the favorite to win the Calder trophy that the NHL’s beginner and would be a deserving victory.
Hutson, a huge reason why the Canadiens is about to hit a ticket to the Stanley Cup finals, has three more games to put themselves in the record book.
Hutson’s 58 assists are the second most of a beginner defender in league story, two behind the 60 recorded by Larry Murphy from Los Angeles Kings during the 1980-81 season.
Hutson’s ability to join a list of the league’s elite does not end there. His 64 points are ranked as the sixth most gathered by a beginner. Murphy believes that the record of 76, followed by Brian Leetch (1988-89, New York Rangers) with 71, Gary Suter (1985-86, Calgary Flames) is third with 68, followed by Phil Housley (1982-83, Buffalo Sabers) with 66, and fifth Ray Bouga Bouga Boure Boure Bours)
It is a large company for Hutson, the 21-year-old offensive Dynamo prepared the 62nd total in 2022.
Although Hutson has probably moved away from the packaging for the top player in his first full large season, it is really a larger than usual area.
While the regular season 2024-25 will remember for Alex Ovechkin who breaks Wayne Gretzky’s goal-coring record, a great story will also be the emergence of beginners.
The Top Rookie runner should easily be Calgary Flame’s goalkeeper Dustin Wolf, who has been the backbone for a low score club that has stayed in the playoffs for the last week. Without Wolf’s Netmindning, the flames would undoubtedly be among the lower foods, but he has them to press to the end.
From there you can expect to see San Jose’s Macklin Celebrini, the top election in last year’s draft, will be in third place in the vote. Celebrini has delivered everything that the sharks hoped for and more.
On the way into Sunday’s game against Flames, Celebrini has collected 24 goals and 62 points for sharks in last place. He already shows the offensive smarters and touch to be a star and is really the cornerstone to turn San Jose’s fortune.
What makes this rookie class to the better is a fact to think about: When the top five votes are announced, it will mean that either a player with 20 goals or a rider who has been red hot in the route and closes at 50 points will be outside the list.
Probably places the fourth in the vote is Matvei Michkov from the Philadelphia Flyers. The season has been something of a nightmare in the city of brotherly love, but Michkov has delivered to expectations. The sublime gifted forward has plenty of work to do on his all-round game, but he goes into the weekend’s action with 24 goals and 59 points.
There have been many seasons where such a campaign would make him a serious challenger for the Calder trophy.
Now to the player who will end up fifth – the one who deserves that place is really a good debate. On the one hand, you have cutter Gauthier from Anaheim Ducks, which reached the 20-goal brand on Thursday. Gauthier was only held to four assists in the first 15 games of the season and felt his way around the league until the break for February’s 4 Nations Face-off, but has improved his game since then and has scored five goals in the last three matches.
In order not to surpass late, San Jose’s second superrookie, Will Smith, has followed a similar path and has been given five times in a four-game line and 10 times in 20 excursions. With 17 goals and 44 points, Smith also has a chance to join the 20-goal club.
