Coby White tops at the right time for Chicago Bulls, which is in 10th place in the eastern conference and holds the last place in the NBA Play-in tournament.
White will look to build on a best career when Bulls visits Miami Heat on Saturday night.
White got a career pile of 44 points in Chicago’s road victory at 125-123 over Orlando Magic on Thursday. He had 17 points during the fourth quarter and stopped shooting 16 out of 28 from the field, including 7 out of 15 from 3-point intervals.
“I just wanted to take what was given to me,” White said. “They didn’t want me to get off some triangles, so they pressed me. The coaching staff made a hell of a job putting us all in position where we could succeed. I give credit to my teammates to trust me.”
Josh Giddey added 19 points, 13 returns and nine assists for Chicago, who played without injured Lonzo Ball (wrist), Nikola Vucevic (calf) and Patrick Williams (knee). All three are listed as doubtful to meet Miami.
The bulls have turned to White to carry a heavier score, and the sixth year attendant has responded by scoring at least 24 points in four straight matches. He got Chicago’s last nine points on Thursday.
“(White) was in the game,” said Bulls coach Billy Donovan. “In addition to the point part of it, the leadership, the voice was great. Even when we were to get a little frustrated because it was a very physical game, just continued to meet the guys,” focus only on what we can control. “Even though I just got down into the route, I thought he was a great soothing force for our guys and just stayed in it.”
Chicago and Miami will meet for the second time this season after Bulls won 133-124 at home on February 4.
Miami coach Erik Spoelstra asks for patience with his injured team, which has lost three of his last four matches and holds no. 7 seed in the east.
Miami started a five-game homemade with a loss of 106-104 to Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday. Bam Adebayo had 29 points and 13 returns for the heat, whose last three losses have come with a combined 11 points.
“Even with this result, I hope that Heat Nation and the fans can really appreciate how hard our guys are competing,” Spoelstra said after Friday’s loss. “And we’re not going anywhere. We’ll get this right.”
Adebayo has three straight double double doubles, which has used another starting lineup in five straight matches.
Miami played without inured Andrew Wiggins (ankle reinforcement), Kel’el Ware (ankle destruction) and Alec Burks (back pain) in Friday’s loss. All three are listed as daily.
“The good thing is that we definitely see progress in the training room with everyone,” Spoelstra said. “It’s unfortunate about Alec. He has done what he could do for the past two days, but his back just tightened. But everyone is feeling better. I’ve been encouraged by it.”
Miami guard Tyler Herro returned on Friday after missing a game due to illness and got 22 points in 39 minutes.
