Minnesota hired Colorado State Niko Medved to become the next coach for Golden Gophers on Monday.
His contract is for six years and requires approval of university regort before his employment can become official. Economic conditions were not revealed.
Medved, 51, is a native of Minneapolis and Minnesota Alumnus who worked as an assistant coach for the 2006-07 program.
His connection to the program goes deep.
“I loved my time at Colorado State and I worked with huge people who made a lasting impact on my life. These are memories that I will protect forever,” said Medved in a news message from school.
“This job was too special to pass and when the opportunity introduced itself, I had to take it. I grew up a GoPher about 15 minutes from the barn. I went to school here, was a student manager here and trained here. This is a special place, it is home and I can’t wait to get started.”
He guided the Colorado State to a 26-10 record this season and a No 12 seed in the NCAA tournament, where Rams defeated No. 5 Memphis in the West Region first round before he fell 72-71 to No. 4 Maryland on Sunday on a Summer-Beater.
Medved compiled a record of 143-85 for seven seasons in Colorado State with three NCAA tournament. Rams was 16-4 in Mountain West during regular season 2024-25 before winning the league.
Medved is 222-173 in total, including head coaching stints at Drake (2017-18) and Furman (2013-17).
He replaces Ben Johnson, who was fired last week after four seasons and a record of 56-71 (22-57 Big Ten) at Minnesota.
