Clara Tauson from Denmark used Sabalenka’s service consequence to knock out the world no. 1, 6-3, 6-2 on Wednesday.
In an uncharacteristic way, Sabalenka met, from Belarus, 16 breaking points, averted 10. But she dropped the last three games on her serving in the first set – and the first two of the second set – and could not dig out of the hole.
In total, Sabalenka won only 48 percent (19 out of 40) points on its first serving, compared with 79 percent (19 out of 24) for Tauson.
Swiatek, from Poland, went toe to toe with Dayana Yastremska in Ukraine before dominating the second set to win 7-5, 6-0 in 92 minutes.
After Yastremska gathered from 5-3 down in the first set, Swiatek was up 6-5 and did not allow the Ukrainian to register a point on her serving, with Swiatek who broke yast strap to win the first set. Swiatek then went through the second set in 33 minutes and handed only eight points.
Yastremska came out aggressive in the match and sued 16 winners to two for Swiateek in the first set, but could not maintain the intensity. She ended with 47 unlucky errors in the WTA 1000 event.
“I knew I had many opportunities to break Dayana on her serve, so I just wanted to be compatible with my service games and I knew the chance will come,” Swiatek said on the track after the match. “We have many girls on tour right now who are heavy hitters and they risk it.
