The 27th edition of the Gold Cup Is just months away, and before the action starts in the field there is an equally important event: the draw. This is where the fate for each participating nation is determined, which sets the stage for potential glory or early elimination. The historical power plants hope to avoid each other, while the newcomers will pray for relatively simpler opponents to drive their dreams of an outrage.
The tournament was known as Conceacaf Championships until the name was changed and “gold” was added. It started with nine participants in El Salvador in 1963, fell to five in Guatemala in 1989 and has presented 16 teams since USACosta Rica and Jamaica 2019. This 16-team format is reflected in the upcoming tournament, which is hosted by the United States and Canada.
The last gold cup draw, held two years ago, presented a difficult group for Canada. Finally, they qualified as runners of Guatemala, just one point ahead of Guadeloupe, a team that they surprisingly brought in in their opening match.
