Homer-Happy Yankees, Diamondbacks Square in New York

Eugenio Suarez has a powerful start to the season.

Suarez leads Majors with five homers through his first five matches, and Arizona Diamondbacks hopes to see that their third bass man produces another big swing Wednesday night when they visit the New York Yankees.

Suarez Lifted Diamondbacks to a 7-5 victory in Tuesday’s series opener when he met a 2-2 splitter from Yankee Reliever Mark Leiter Jr. into left field seats. Suarez met his sixth career Grand Slam in a five-run eighth round.

“I’ve never started like this year, and it feels good,” Suarez said. “I want to keep doing it, keep trusting myself and seeing what happens and seeing how the season treats me.”

After being acquired from Seattle Mariners, Suarez produced a 30-home season for the fifth time during his first season with Arizona 2024. He met only six home races until June 30 before warming up over the past three months.

Suarez’s five homers are bound for the third most in Major League history through the first five games. Only Trevor Story (2016) and Larry Walker (1997) had more when they met sex for Colorado Rockies.

According to Elias Sports Bureau, Suarez is the third player since 1900, which has each of his first five hits goes for Homers. The others were Rob Deer in 1992 for Detroit Tigers and Rodolfo Castro 2021 for Pittsburgh Pirates.

“I’ve been in this game for a long time, so I’ve seen some guys get hot just outside the bat, but it was a moment for him,” said Arizona boss Torey Lovullo. “It was spectacular.”

Suarez also has 11 RBI, the most through five games in Arizona history after meeting his 13th career female who gave their team the lead in eighth or later.

“He put a really good swing on it,” Leiter said. “It’s unfortunate that it went out.”
