Indian Wells 2025 Day 1 Recap

Day one at 2025 GDP Paribas Open saw the upper half of the draw fired by its round with 128 matches, with only one match that was not completed because Zhizhen Zhang vs Gabriel Diallo was canceled at 4-4 in the final set due to rain.

The problem with 96 player drinking champions 1000 matches which in the last two weeks is that the opening days have very few interesting matches due to lack of them, and there are no top seeds in action because of their village.

This does not mean that the quality is low, but it is difficult to choose matches you would be too interested in watching if you are a relaxed fan or pay a premium for tickets.

The most important call points on day one were home -grown success when Marcos Giron, Tristan Boyer and Colton Smith all continued to round two.

Smith’s victory was his first on the main ATP level when he defeated Flavio Cobolli in straight sets. Elsewhere, former champion Cam Norrie, who enjoys the Indian well condition, took Luca Nardi.

Colton Smith Cracks Cobolli

Colton Smith Indian WellsColton Smith Indian Wells

Colton Smith has arrived at the big stage at Indian Wells and collected past Flavio Cobolli 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 in its first main ATP level match.

Smith, who successfully has Patty his trade at Challenger level this season, was a sub-dog against the 40th ranked Cobbolli, but after his two qualified victories he could surpass the Italian in the big moments.

The American fired 27 winners, moved forward and cut off some crucial breaking points. I’ve seen a couple of Smith’s matches this season, including his one against Karue Sell, and he has an athletic game. A typical American college player in that sense but given where the game is on the way he is likely to rise the ranking.

Norrie turns off Nardi

Cameron Norrie has conditions in California’s desert, and 2021 GDP Paribas Open Champion made a dominant start to its Indian well campaign and dismantled Italy’s Luca Nardi 6-0, 6-3 in just 64 minutes.

Nardi made headlines last year when he stunned Novak Djokovic on his way to the fourth round last year, but he had no answers to Norrie’s Snäy forehand and flat backhand game when Brit controlled procedures from the first ball, won 23 out of 26 points behind his first service and made very few mistakes from the baseline.

Norrie has done at least the quarter finals for the past four years and after a Ropey 2024 season he looks to bounce back here. Then he will meet Jiří Lehečka, where he holds a 2-1 edge in their head-to-head.

Elsewhere, Norries 2021 Final opponents, Nikoloz Basilashvili, fell to Marcos Giron 7-5, 7-6 (3) for more American success, but Nishesh Basavardy and Reilly Opelka both lost in their opening matches at Stadium 1.

Wildcard Opelka fell to Safulin, who picked up his first victory at the turn level since November. Opelka initially looked into control after securing an early break, but Safiullin broke back at 5-5 in the opening set, and the Russian bore that momentum in the other, which saved two break points at 3-4 before breaking for 5-4 and closed the match 7-5 6-4.

Basavarddy, which made its Indian Well’s main debut, fell to China’s bu yunchaokete 7-5, 6-4. The American joke sign showed flashes of the form that saw him take a set of Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open, but BU kept the edge in his baseline exchanges and sealed the victory in straight sets.

The Frenchman Corentin Moutet sacked his first victory in Indian Wells and defeated Jordan Thompson 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Moutet is always an interesting watch that uses its variation, mixes discs and off-shots to disturb Aussie’s rhythm.
