Rune slices and dice past Medvedev

Holger Rune delivered another composed performance in Indian Wells when he conveniently sent twice runners Daniil Medvedev 7-5 6-4.
The Danish came armed with a clear tactical plan, mixed variety and patience from the baseline, applied lots of air to their shoots to stay in the points and use discs to frustrate co -vedev and reach their first ATP Masters 1000 final since Paris 2022.
Before match, I thought it would be Medvedev who got Rune to break away from all the tactical plans he had and choose low percentage shots, but the roles were completely reverse.
Medvedev had no answers from the back of the court, could not strike through Rune and was driven to make mistakes.
We were spoiled for many years and looked at Federer’s ability in the procedure, so I was super disappointed at how Medvedev fought in that area. When he is 10 meters behind the baseline he is an absolute animal, but gets him up near the service line, and he is outside the top 500.
Rune’s record is not a prominent shot; These were just slow, floating balls that were not very low or tricky, but Medvedev could not do anything with them.
However, I was impressed with how Rune implemented the plan; It was drilled into him before the match and worked flawlessly. He never looked in a lot of trouble; His speed got him to each ball easily, and to know that he could float the ball back and come to the next gave him confidence.
Historically, he has lost a lot of matches from making terrible decisions. I clearly remember his match vs Wawrinka in Indian Wells a couple of years ago, where he played some horrible shots at the end of the third set, but there was none of this, and if he can hold up this kind of composed game, the clay should be a good distance for him.
That means everything. The job is not over yet, but it feels fantastic. Playing Daniil is one of the toughest challenges for me on the tour. I managed to beat him the first time [we played]But we know each other well. I obviously had the right tactics, but it was still so difficult because he makes great effort and is super solid. So I’m very proud of myself. It’s about finding the right pace, and fortunately I have good leg work, so I can reach many balls. It is a very specific tactical plan that I did with my coach last night and this morning. It’s about finding the right pace and what pictures to beat, because so many players miss too many pictures against Daniil. He makes you go more, so I’m super proud that I managed to find the right rhythm. Rune on his win.

Draper Down’s defending champion Alcaraz

In today’s second semi-final, Jack Draper Carlos Alcaraz ended the 16-match winning line in Indian Wells and pulled off a 6-1, 0-6, 6-4 upset to reach their first ATP Masters 1000 final.
With the victory, Draper will break into the top 10 in the ATP ranking for the first time, climbing to No. 8, and his game is a real handful, especially in these types of conditions.
The heavy, Lefty Topspin forehand does much damage, and Alcaraz did not find a way to counteract it. Seducing the match I thought it would be close, because in all four of their previous matches, Draper has caused Alcaraz problems, but I thought Carlos’s speed and ability to get the court would show up for the difference.
Alcaraz, however, looked very flat from the beginning. Just looked at his split step, it was not the typical bounce or wide base in his game that lets him play like Energizer Bunny. Nerves? Just one of these days? Over 5 he may find a way, but the best of three does not give you any turning room.
Draper took advantage of it in the opener, and even though he went off to the second, he was the stronger player in the third.
Did the ‘not up’ call a difference? I don’t think so.
It was a strange match in all honesty. Carlos came out a little flat, I felt it. I had a chance in the first game in the second, and he came with an ace. What happened to him happened to me, I got tight, I had low energy. Against the best players in the world, they can change their speed very quickly. I got lost out there for 25 minutes, but in the third I was really proud of my competitiveness, my attitude and I somehow managed to get over the line. Draper on the match.
