Iowa shares roads with from McCaffery

Iowa Hawkeye’s head coach from McCaffery looks at the action on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, in the first round of 2025 Tiaa Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament between Iowa Hawkeyes and Ohio State Buckeyes at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Iowa dismissed men’s basketball coach from McCaffery after 15 seasons on Friday.

The university’s leader is constantly victorious (297), McCaffery led Hawkeyes to seven NCAA tournaments. Unfortunately for McCaffery’s team, they failed to reach Sweet 16.

This season was not a banner for McCaffery, whose team ended with a record of 17-16 after a setback of 106-94 to Illinois on Thursday in the second round of the Big Ten tournament. McCaffery was thrown out during the second half of that game after evaluating two technical fouls to argue with the officials, which led to Illinois making four free throw.

Per University, Iowa will start a national search for a new head coach immediately.

“From McCaffery has been an integral part of our Hawkeye family for the past 15 years. He is a huge coach and teacher, and we are grateful for the positive impact he has made at the department and society,” said Hawkeye’s Athletic Manager Beth Goetz. “We have a deep appreciation for his commitment to our student athletes and his passion for the game that will have a lasting impact on our program.”

McCaffery, 65, became the winning coach in the Iowa story after Hawkeyes pulled away for a victory 86-77 over host Minnesota on January 15, 2024.

McCaffery, who took Roret for Iowa 2010, won his 272nd match with the program. He surpassed the long coach Tom Davis, who won 271 matches in 1986-99.

McCaffery owns a 297-207 overall main coaching record with Lehigh (1985-88), UNC Greensboro (1999-2005), Siena (2005-10) and Iowa.
