Dallas Cowboy’s owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday that he thinks a long -term deal with Star Pass Rusher Micah Parsons is not so far away from becoming a reality.
Jones said Parsons called him to set up a meeting, and the two spoke for “five or six hours” to develop a long -term extension.
“Most of the questions we agree on. We discussed everything,” Jones said at the NFL’s annual league meeting. “But we obviously do not have an agreement in relation to the new contract.”
Right now, Parsons is in line with earning about $ 24 million on the fifth year of its beginner. At the end of last week, Dallas Morning News reported that Parsons applied for a record set of $ 200 million contract extension that would make him the highest paid non-quarter in the NFL.
As for the negotiations, Jones said he has discussed the contract directly with Parsons – not his agent, David Mulugheta.
“I’m the one who has to sign the control, and Micah is the one who has to agree to it,” Jones said. “It is the straightest way to get to it is what writes control and the one who agrees to talk, and it is the principal who is involved here.”
When it comes to excluding Mulugheta, Jones does not see it as a big deal.
“The agent is not a factor here,” Jones said. “And I don’t know his name. And so my point is that I don’t try to humiliate him in any way but it’s not about an agent.”
However, Parsons took to social media Tuesday to say that no business would be done without his agent.
“Facts !! David is the best and I will not do any business without David Mulugheta involved!” Parsons wrote. “Like everyone with good reason, I hired experts for a reason. There is no one that I trust more when it comes to negotiating contracts than David! There will be no back doors in this contract negotiation.”
Also on Tuesday, Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said he expects Parsons to participate in the team’s voluntary training session despite ongoing contract negotiations.
Training starts on Monday.
“Hi, look, at the end of the day this is a company and when you are dealing with the money thrown around, not only with Micah but with the big names players, the negotiations sometimes take time,” said the first year coach Per ESPN. “I feel very comfortable. Micah said he will be left. I think he wants to be. I think we are all very comfortable with it.”
With the departure from the long defensive leader Demarcus Lawrence, Parsons has a chance to fill that void.
“Micah is excited about the possibility of rising in a leadership role,” Schottenheimer said. “There is no reason why he should not do it. The best teams I have ever been with, their best players are their best leader, and so again, I think the more you are around, the more you have a chance to influence the guys, and not just the guys who are back but there are a bunch of new faces. We have added the free agency.
Parsons, 25, recorded 12 sacks, 43 tackles and two forced fumbles in 13 matches (all starts) last season.
A Pro Bowl Valion in each of its first four seasons in the league, Parsons has a total of 256 tackles (63 for loss), 112 quarterback hits, 52.5 bags, nine forced fumbles and four fumble recovery in 63 career games (all starts).
