Kevin Fiala and Phillip Daneault scored Power-Play goals 6:54 from each other during the second period when Los Angeles Kings extended their home-winning line to seven matches and their team record home points streak to 15 with a 3-1 victory over the New York Rangers on Tuesday evening.
Los Angeles (40-21-9, 89 points) scored several Power Play goals for the second time this season and moved two points ahead of Edmonton Oilers for second place in Pacific Division. The kings also remained five points behind the Vegas Golden Knights for the division leadership.
JT Miller scored for Rangers (34-32-6, 74 points,) who lost for the fifth time in six matches and remained one point behind Montreal Canadiens for the second wild card site in the eastern conference. New York also has the same points as the New York Islanders, which has two matches in hand.
Fiala added a plot-net goal with 16 seconds left on a delayed penalty for its fifth multi-target game this season.
Los Angeles goalkeeper Darcy Kuemper made 22 rescues. New York’s Igor Shesterkin stopped 30 shots.
After getting two shots on goal during the opening period, Rangers took a 1-0 lead 2:10 into the other when Miller gathered a recovery of Alexis Lafreniere’s shot behind the net and the puck seeped under Kuemper. The game continued because officials did not originally awarded him a goal, but at the next stop officials in Situation Room decided that the puck crossed the finish line from Kuemper’s right skates.
After an oblique penalty for Matt Rempe, the kings banded it with 9:06 left. As the kings cycled the puck went fiala to the net, left alone on the left side of the net and redirected Andrei Kuzmenko’s perfect pass for the vacant network.
The kings took a 2-1 lead when Daneault received the recovery of Trevor Moore’s shot at the lower edge of the right circle. He used his skate to gather the puck and whipped a wrist shot past a spreading shesterkin.
