Day five at Mutua Madrid Open 2025 saw Sascha Zverev continue her pursuit of a third title at Caja Magica and fled from Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in a tricky three-sets that ended in a final tie.
An obstacle he does not have to face in the fourth round is to defend the champion Andrey Rublev, whose hope of repeating his performance from twelve months ago ended prematurely on the hands of Sascha Bublik.
In what has so far become a standard procedure in Madrid, the day was not complete without any other pension when Benjamin Bonzi threw in the towel after Taylor Fritz had leveled his match on a set.

Zvereev shields Fokina

Alexander Zverev fought past Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in a hard-fought 2-6, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (0) third round victory at Mutua Madrid Open on Sunday.
The twice the master overcame a tough Spanish audience and a lively performance from Fokina to keep his title hope alive.
After an unfortunate first set, Zverev collected from a breakdown in the second and secured Tie-break before surviving a late horror when he failed to serve the match at 5-4 in the third. Germany’s calm in the last grid turned out to be crucial and sealed the victory after 2 hours and 44 minutes.
Fokina, with finals in Delray Beach and Acapulco this year, plus a semi-final appearance in Monte Carlo, pressed hard but vacated in the clutch, his pre-erroneous in tie-break when the German swelled it 7-0 to end all Spanish representations in the draw.
Zverev, fresh from a München title, hit 11 aces and made 17 fewer winged mistakes than Fokina (28-45), and he looks to regain his form after a disappointment.
There were many ups and downs, but he played fantastic in the first set. I played terribly in the first set and then I waited for my chances. I had to continue digging deeply. Winning as it is always good and I am happy today. Zverev on his winnings.
Medvedev Masters The Lesser Cerundolo

Daniil Medvedev met the ground at Mutua Madrid Open on Sunday and sent the Argentine qualifier Juan Manuel Cerundolo 6-2, 6-2 in a sharp 62-minute screen to reach the fourth round.
The world # 10, which received a walkover in the second round against Laslo Djere, was sharp from the beginning in his first match since Monte-Carlo. Medvedev saved the lonely breaking point he met and converted four out of five breaking point opportunities to overclass the world no. 126 Cerundolo in their first meeting.
I felt good in practice here, but it is not the same in a match. Practice’s judge is usually a little different from the center. Too safe [I was] A little nervous because we have a small superstition as a tennis player who, the worse you play before the tournament, the better you play in it, and the better you play before, the worse you play in the matches. But I overcame this superstition four years ago, so I was looking forward to implementing the game I had in practice. I am satisfied with my level. Medvedev on his win.
