Magda Linette Shocks No. 3 Coco Gauff at Miami Open

Magda Linette meets Jessica Pegula during the second round of the GDP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California, Friday 7 March 2025.

Oseded Magda Linette of Poland is added to World No. 3 Coco Gauff’s latest fight and pulls off a 6-4, 6-4 upset on Monday to reach the quarterfinals of the Miami Open.

Ranked No. 34, 33-year-old Linette got his first victory over a top-three player since 2021, and gathered in the second set after Gauff moved forward 4-3.

“I think it was very important for me to continue pressing cocos to serve to make sure she feels the pressure,” Linette said. “I’m glad I returned well. I was really brave. Then I could back it up with pretty solid service games.”

Gabaff made 12 double errors and was broken four times by Linette, which was only broken twice. Gauff put only about half of her first serving and committed 45 unthreated errors.

“It wasn’t good today,” Gauff said. “It’s not been the last few weeks – I’m trying to find out. Definitely not happy about it. … just one of those days when I felt horrible in everything on court.”

Gauff started strong in 2025, but came empty on WTA’s Middle East swing and lost to Unseeded Belinda Bencic at Indian Wells.

Linette will meet No. 6 Seeds Jasmine Paolini from Italy, which gathered past Japan’s Naomi Osaka 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, which saves 12 out of 15 breaking points while converting three out of five.

Gauff was not the only upset victim Monday when Britain’s Emma Raducanu took down No. 17 Frö Amanda Anisimova 6-1, 6-3.

Raducanu produced a solid first serve percent (78 percent) on his first serving and collected 24 out of 31 points on his first serving, while converting 5 out of 10 break points.

Next up for Raducanu will be World No. 4 Jessica Pegula, who had no problems with No. 23 Seed Marta Kostyuk from Ukraine, who won in straight sets 6-2, 6-3, in 77 minutes.

“I know it will be a really difficult match but I think I play pretty good tennis,” Raducanu told Tennis Channel. “I’m really happy with how things go and even more important just to enjoy finding the competitiveness again.”

Together with Gauff and Anisimova, another couple of Americans – No. 14 Frö Danielle Collins and Unseded Ashlyn Krueger – package in straight sets were sent.

Top seed Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus published a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Collins, while No. 9 seed Qinwen Zheng took down Krueger 6-2, 7-6 (3). Sabalenka and Zheng will meet in the quarter finals.

One day after upset Madison keys, the unseded Alex Eala moved from the Philippines into the quarter finals when No. 10 seed Paula Badosa in Spain pulled out with a lower back injury.

Eala will take on No. 2 seeds Iga Swiatek in Poland, which defeated No. 22 Frö Elina Svitolina in Ukraine 7-6 (5), 6-3.
