Matt Kuchar withdrew from the WM Phoenix Open on Wednesday after his father’s death.
Peter Kuchar died unexpectedly on Tuesday at the age of 73, his son confirmed to golfchannel.com.
Peter Kuchar was Matts Caddy when he won the USA amateur in 1997 and was a common in the PGA Tour galleries.
“My pop was a big fan of sports and forwarded his love for competition to me,” Matt Kuchar said in a statement. “He was a wonderful person – an incredible grandfather, an loving husband and best friend of my mom, and the best father I could ever have hoped for. An eager pickleball player and outdoor man, pop was a man of great character and a character in his own right.
“He is the person who introduced me to the golf game, a tie that will always remain between us. These memories, and so many more, will be with me and our family forever. He will be missing more than words can express. We appreciate the support and integrity while we mourn as a family. ”
Matt Kuchar, 46, is a nine times winner on the PGA Tour.
He was replaced in the field for this week’s tournament in Scottsdale, Ariz., By Sweden’s Jesper Svensson.
