Menik Downs Draper

MenyikMenyik

Jakub Mensik took Jack Drapers six-match winning line on Saturday and delivered a crucial 7-6 (2), 7-6 (3).

Draper’s heavy games shine through his Indian Wells title run, but he struggled to find a way through Mensik, which surpassed the British with two razors.

Mensik seems to raise its level to the top 10 opposition, and he now has a 6-5 record. The Czech Republic broke down 21 ESS, including four in the first tiebreaker.

Mensik is now facing Roman Safulin, a 6-7 (4), 6-3, 7-5 comeback winners over Alexei Popyrin.

The most important thing today was the service, that was the key. I knew in the second set, it would be tough at 30/30 moments and in tie-break, so I was just trying to stay focused. I am super happy that I kept focus to the end. Hopefully I will continue to rise as I am. It’s my first [full] Years on the ATP tour, so I just enjoy every moment to play against these top guys. Jack has played tremendously in recent weeks, the months. I knew it was an opportunity for me, so I took it. Mensik on its victory over Draper.

Zverev makes a solid start

Sascha Zverev has not been in top form since his Australian Open Final defeat, but he started Miami with a leading 6-2, 6-4 victory over Jacob Fearnley.

German’s success over the past year or so has largely been thanks to his improved serving. He made 42 out of 47 first earns and reminded everyone, which is why he is a perennial threat when that shot clicks.

Fearnley, now stuck in the top 100, has an aggressive, driven game, but Zverev snuff it out cold with his metronomic baseline game.

Next up: Jordan Thompson, who fought past Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 7-6 (4), 7-6 (1).

I am generally satisfied with my level today. In Indian Wells it was very different, so I hope I can continue to play this way and have a fantastic week here. I have generally served poorly, especially after the Australian Open. It’s a shot I’ve been working on since Indian Wells; I had more than two weeks since I lost early there … Of course I am happy with the victory today, but hopefully this is just the beginning of the tournament, and hopefully I can go deep here. Zverev on his winnings.
