Berrettini bursts through zverev

Berrettini Monte CarloBerrettini Monte Carlo

Matteo Berrettini was a dominant force on Clay Post Wimbledon last season, and he has similarly started in 2025 and shot past Sascha Zverev 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 in a two-hour, 27-minute battle.

It is the Italian’s biggest victory ever in terms of ranking, although perhaps somewhat misleading that Zverev has distributed victories against the world number 2 as candy since the Australian Open 😁

In this, Zverev dominated early and competed through the first set when Berrettini struggled to find his rhythm.

Berrettini, however, has a potent serving and advance, and he called his aggression, leveled the match and carries up in a tense decision.

At 5-4, Berrettini vacated while serving for the match, but he regrouped with Flair. At 5-5, 40/40, he dug in for an astonishing 48-shot rally and dressed it with a pre-winner who brought the audience to his feet.

Moment later he broke when Zverev couldn’t pick up a ball in the backhand corner, and this time Berrettini did not woke up, sealed the victory on serving and raised his arms to soak in the raw cheers.

For Zverev he has not played well since Australia, and he has gone from having a realistic chance at World number 1 to barely winning a match. He will see about regrouping at the ATP 500 in Munich at Hemmamarken, but his forehand is a complete responsibility, and if he does not stop pushing the ball, the trend will continue.

I haven’t won many matches. So it’s been the worst period since my injury in recent months. I played a fantastic first set, and when I got broken in the second set I played 10 levels down. My ball is much slower. I stop hitting the ball. Same story in recent months. Nothing changes. So it’s me who lost the match, once again … I thought my level was horrible, but that’s just my opinion. It’s a question I lose. It’s as simple as it. You win one or two matches like this; There are no more questions for me in my mind. But I lost three sets in Buenos Aires, I lost three sets in Rio, I lost three sets in Indian Wells, I lost three sets in Miami, I lost three sets here and I did not win a single. So that’s the thing. Zverev on his loss.

Tsitsipas turns the tide toward Thompson

Tsitsipas Monte CarloTsitsipas Monte Carlo

Stefano’s Tsitsipas often delivers his best on the Principality, and he arranged a dirty 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 comeback against Jordan Thompson on Tuesday to start his title defense.

Thompson, who has only won two matches on Clay at the Masters 1000 level in his career, was not expected to pose much of a threat, but he caused the Greek problems early.

However, Tsitsipas adjusted its game plan and moved to a more aggressive return position in the second set, which paid dividends. In the end, he stopped running away a comfortable winner and won seven of the last nine matches to move on.

Then the 26-year-old meets either Nuno Borges or Pedro Martinez in the third round.

I really didn’t know what to expect, you don’t know what your opponent can do. He showed a good first set, he seemed to play quite reserved and did not give me much to work with. I was just trying to find something to reuse that texture in my game. Tsitsipas on their winnings.

Other matches of notes

Monte CarloMonte Carlo

The Italian Flavio Cobolli backed up its Bucharest title by moving past the qualifying Dusan Lajovic 6-4, 6-2 in a secure opening match. Cobolli, who was new to his first ATP tour title in Romania, where he defeated Sebastian Baez, dictated Cobolli the game with his aggressive baseline game to bed to bed its sad start to the season.

He will meet 12th seed Arthur files in the second round after the Frenchman surpassed Tallon Griekspoor 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-2 in a two-hour, 19-minute grind. Fils, who struggled on serve early, found their rhythm in the rider and won eight of the last ten matches to move on.

Elsewhere, the 14th Frös Frances Tiefoe survived a roller coaster against Miomir Kecmanovic and prevailed 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (5). Tiefoe, who arrived in Monte-Carlo after competing in Houston, looked sharp in the first set but vacated when Kecmanovic fought back to force a decision. The American held the company in the third canceled tiebreak and won the last three points to move on after two hours and 43 minutes.

He will now meet Alexei Popyrin, who arranged his own comeback to upset Ugo Humbert 3-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4. Will Big Foe have something left in the tank after Houston, a trans-atlantic flight and today’s three-sets?

The 15th seed grigor Dimitrov sent Nicolas Jarry 6-3, 6-4. The Monaco resident won 72% of his first serving points and set up a second round with local joke character Valentin Vacherot.

At the same time, Nuno Borges drew a surprise and led the 10th Frö Holger Rune 6-2, 3-0 when the Danish retired due to injury. The finalist 2023, Rune, fought physically and handed Borges a way to the second round, where he will meet Pedro Martinez, who fought past Lorenzo Sonego 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 in a Topsy-Turvy business.

Tomas Machac also impressed and overcome serial winner Sebastian Baez 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to reach the second round.

The Czech Republic, a consistent artist over the past 18 months, adjusted his game after a slow start and used his flat ground stocks to dictate games and set up a meeting with the eighth seed Alex de Minaur.

Rounded the action, Roberto Bautista Agut cruised past Brandon Nakashima 6-2, 6-4, while Tomas Martin Etcheverry struggled back to defeat the qualifier Corentin Moutet 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 and end his losing line.
