Australia’s My Woo Lee climbed for a couple on the last hole to keep off a collection of hard charging pursuers and win on the PGA tour for the first time and captured the Texas Children’s Houston Open on Sunday at the Memorial Park Golf Course.
Lee shot one last round 3-under-pair 67 and used a magnificent putt from the green on the last hole that led to a tap-in pair. His 20-under 260 was good enough, as the World No. 1 Golf player Scottie Scheffler (63) and Gary Woodland (62) ended a stroke back.
Lee was in the last group and his tee shot on the last hole went into the rough. His approach left him from the green before delivering at a big moment.
The 26-year-old started the day with a lead with four shots, but it was far from a comfortable round.
Scheffler had four consecutive birds on the back nine before he ended up with back-to-back pairs in his bogey-free round.
After playing the first 10 holes in 5 below, Woodland seemed to have his momentum crushed with a bogey on No. 13. But Hans Birdie on the 15th and an eagle on the next hole put him back on the right track, and he wrapped the round with a birdie. He had to wait for Scheffler and Lee to end to learn their fate.
Finland’s Sami Valimaki (62) ended up in fourth place at 17 below, followed by Wyndham Clark (64), Northern Ireland Rory Mcilroy (64), Canadian Taylor Pendrith (65) and Argentinas Alejandro Tosti (68) at 15 under.
Scheffler has not won this year and is only a few weeks away from the champions, where he is the defending master.
Woodland, a four times winner on the tour, applied for his first victory since the US Open 2019.
Woodland moved to second place by walking 4 under eight holes and dragging Lee with four shots. Woodland closed within two shots through 10 holes on the way to its lowest 18-hole score on tour since 2018.
Half of the field was turned off on the 10th hole, so there were some rapidly changing sequences on the top list.
