Ja’kobi Gillespie scored 26 points and pulled out seven assists on Sunday when No. 25 Maryland overcame a half-time deficit to destroy visiting Iowa 101-75 in a Big Ten Conference Matchup in College Park, MD.
All five Terrapin starts made in double numbers for the second straight game and the fifth time this season. Derik Queen added 18 points and 13 returns for his third double double in a row, while Rodney Rice also counted 18 points. Selton Miguel drilled 5 out of 9 3-points and finished with 17 points and five assists, while Julian Reese chipped in a 16-point, 12-Rebound double double.
Maryland (20-6, 10-5) made 58.2 percent of their images for the game, including 22 out of 37 in the second half, and was 12 out of 26 on 3 points. It owned the boards 42-29.
Pryce Sandfort scored 15 points for Hawkeyes (14-11, 5-9), while Payton Sandfort added 14 points and 10 returns. Seydou Traore chipped in 14 points but that was not enough because Iowa was buried 54-24 during the second half.
After four points at the break, Terps wasted some time to take control. Rice laughed with eight straight points in the first 1:36, including a couple of 3 points, which gave them the lead for good.
Gillespie stole the ball and scored to make the lead 10 on the brand 14:36. From there, the advantage continued to grow. There was 20 on Miguel’s layout with 8:56 left and reached 30 on Gillespie’s layout with 2:04 left that pressed Maryland to triple figures.
It was far from the first half, when both teams did seem to be at any time. Hawkeyes made 20 out of 35 shots from the field and 8 out of 14 on 3-points, while Terps was 17 out of 30 from the floor and 8 out of 13 on 3 points.
The difference was that Maryland was sloppy with the ball and committed 11 sales that Iowa paid for 23 points. The last two of them came up with Brauns’ Dunk with 37 seconds left that helped Hawkeyes reach half time with 51-47 advantage.
