Oilers’ Connor McDavid injured in OT loss to jet aircraft

Edmonton Oiler’s superstar Captain Connor McDavid suffered a lower bodily injury during the second period of an overtime loss of 4-3 to Winnipeg Jets on Thursday.

McDavid seemed to be injured after being supported by Winnipeg defender Josh Morrissey in his pursuit of the puck in Jets’ zone.

The severity of the injury was not immediately known for McDavid, which set out the third period and overtime. Oiler’s head coach Kris Knoblauch did not give an update after the match.

Oilers (40-24-5, 85 points), who played without Leon Draisaitl (unresolved injury), also saw goalkeeper Stuart Skinner (concussion protocol) of departs late in the third period after he was involved in a target cloud collision with jets forward Gabriel Vilardi.

“It was an Oortodok’s type of game,” said ahead Zach Hyman. “You lose Connor, you lose stu and you already miss Leon.”

McDavid, 28, noted an assist on Jeff Skinner’s goal during the second period to expand his score to 13 matches (four goals, 15 assists). The three-o’clock Hart Trophy receiver has been 90 points (26 goals, team best 64 assists) in 63 games this season.

He is a season away from publishing 132 points and guiding Edmonton to Game 7 in the Stanley Cup final before falling to Florida Panthers. McDavid was named Conn Smythe Trophy recipient as the playoffs MVP.

A five times Art Ross Trophy as the league leader, McDavid has amounted to 1,072 points (361 goals, 711 assists) in 708 career games since he was elected by Oilers with the overall choice of the NHL draft 2015.

Draisaitl, which is considered day to day, has registered 101 points (NHL leading 49 goals, 52 assists) in 68 matches this season. The 29-year-old was 2019-20 Hart Trophy receiver.

Skinner, 26, is 23-17-4 with two finishes, a 2.85 goal-to average and .896 Savings percentage in 47 matches (46 starts) this season.
