The race for film’s most prestigious honor has officially begun with the unveiling of the 97th Academy Awards (Oscars 2025) nominations on Thursday morning. This year celebrates international storytelling and genre-defying films that have pushed creative boundaries.
At the front of this year’s lineup is Jacques Audiards Emilia Pereza Spanish-language, French-made drug musical that broke a record with 13 nominations—the most ever for a non-English-language film. From Best Picture to a groundbreaking Best Actress nod for Karla Sofía Gascón, Emilia Perez has emerged as a trailblazer, highlighting trans representation in an industry that is often slow to embrace change. Close behind is Brady Corbet’s post-war epic The Brutalist and Jon M. Chu is dazzling Evileach garnering 10 nominations. Both films are also in the running for Best Picture, along with a variety of contenders that include Dune: Part Two, Nickel Boysand the daring political drama I’m still here.
Unlike last year, when Oppenheimer dominated as the clear favorite, this year’s Oscar race is still wide open. With five weeks to go until the ceremony, no single film has emerged as a definitive front-runner and exiter Emilia Pérez, The Brutalist, Wicked, Anoraand Conclave in fierce competition for the coveted title of Best Film.

This year’s nominations arrive under extraordinary circumstances, with Hollywood grappling with the aftermath of the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles that delayed the announcement and set a somber tone over the awards season. Despite some calls to postpone the ceremony altogether, the Academy has positioned this year’s Oscars as a celebration of resilience and a celebration of creativity, vowing to honor the global film community and those who have endured hardship.
“We will reflect on recent events while highlighting the strength, creativity and optimism that define Los Angeles and our industry,” said Bill Kramer, Academy CEO, and Janet Yang, President, in a statement to members on Wednesday!
The Oscars ceremony, hosted by Conan O’Brien, takes place on March 2, airing live on ABC and streaming on Hulu. Now, as we count down to Hollywood’s biggest night, here’s the complete list of nominees for the 2025 Academy Awards.
