Florida Panthers defender Niko Mikkola received a fine of $ 5,000 for unsportsmanlike behavior on Monday.
The fines are in response to a slapshot that Mikkola sent down the ice with two seconds left on the game bell with Panthers down 4-2 to the Canadiens on Sunday. The puck met almost Montreal’s players, with some Canadian expressing their dissatisfaction.
Mikkola was evaluated a minor penalty for unsportsmanlike behavior as well as a 10-minute play performance, even though there was no time left on the clock.
The fine, which was announced by the NHL Department for Player Security, is the maximum permissible by the collective agreement.
Mikkola, a 28-year-old from Finland, is in his second season with Panthers after four with St. Louis Blues and one with the New York Rangers.
In the season he has set the highest of the career season for goals (five), assists (16) and points (21) to go with his 62 penalties in 68 matches.
