Pete Alonso Homers, knocking in three as Mets Edge A’s

Pete Alonso remained Red Hot Friday Night, when Mets Slugger hammered and ended with three hits and three RBI to lead New York to a 7-6 victory over athletics in the opener of a three-game series in West Sacramento, Calif.

Luisangel Acuna added two hits for Mets, which has won seven out of eight.

Miguel Andujar was 2-for-4 with a Homer and three RBI for athletics, which lost for the fourth time in five matches and fell to 1-6 at home.

Alonso, who did not sign with Mets as a free agent until just before spring training in mid-February, went 3-for-3 and was hit by a pitch. He had an RBI double in the fifth and lifted a sacrificial fly in the sixth before staying for what turned out to be the decisive driving in eighth.

Alonso strikes .378 with a national league leader 18 RBI through Mets first 13 matches. He did not reach 18 RBI until New York’s 36th match last season.

New York’s Brandon Nimmo hammered himself from JP Sears (1-2) in the other, and Luis Torrens laced an RBI double later in the frame. Starling Marte met a two-run double in sixth to extend Mets LED to 6-1.

Athletics began to increase a comeback attempt at the bottom of the sixth against Griffin Canning (1-1), which was chased after giving up Jacob Wilson’s RBI single and Andujar’s two-run Homer.

Canning gave four runs on seven hits – including Andujar’s RBI single in the second – and three walks while they knocked out three over 5 1/3 rounds.

Reed Garrett, Ryne Stanek and AJ Minter combined for 2 2/3 rounds of speechless ball before athletics made twice in ninth against Edwin Diaz. New York closer got his third rescue despite giving up Shea Langelier’s RBI double and handing over a sacrificial fly to JJ Bleday.

Diaz then got Wilson, who represented the winning driving at the plate, to mark out to others.

Sears allowed three runs on six hits and a walk while they knocked out seven over four plus rounds.
