Left -hander Jesus Luzardo debuts Phillies when Philadelphia visits Washington Nationals on Saturday.
Luzardo, who went 3-6 with a 5.00 era in 12 starts last season with Miami Marlins, was acquired in a trade in December. The 27-year-old was originally prepared in 2016 by citizens and sent to athletics as part of the trade that brought closer to Sean Doolittle to Washington.
With Marlin’s last season, he went on the injured list June 22 with a stress reaction and missed the rest of the season. After a rocky start to his last spring training, he started Yankees in order in his last inning.
“I’m happy about spring and how it went overall,” Lucardo said. “But I just wanted to end on a good note. That’s why I was glad they let me go back there for fifth and finish.”
Luzardo is 1-3 with a 5.25 era in seven career species versus Washington.
The right-hander Jake Irvin (10-14, 4.41 ERA 2024) will take the pile for citizens. During his second season in 2024, Irvin appeared as a reliable part of Washington’s rotation and band for the Major League lead with 33 starts.
Irvin, 28, saw its speed dip in its March 19 Spring training start against the Cardinals, when he average 91.4 miles per hour, down 2.5 mph from his average in 2024.
“It may be, sometimes I think he is struggling a bit to get on baseball,” said National -Manager Dave Martinez. “But we’ll see. I’m not too worried. We’ll see how he’s coming out next time.”
Irvin is 0-3 with a 5.93 era in five career starts against Phillies. JT Realmuto is 5-for-9 (.556) with a Homer and three RBI versus Irvin.

National Catcher Keibert Ruiz had two hits, including a Homer, to meet a long bat against Phillies Ace Zack Wheeler. Ruiz Fouled by seven consecutive places before winning the duel against the Philliesess.
Ruiz, who wants to bounce back after meeting .229 2024, also threw out a runner trying to steal others.
“As we all know, he can usually put these balls into play,” Martinez said. “But to meet Wheeler, to do it, is fantastic as it is. But to do it so? What an incredible bat.”
