Iowa Sophomore forward Pryce Sandfort became the third Iowa player who put his name in the transfer portal after the firing of head coach Fran McCaffery on Friday.
Sandfort, which was an average of 8.8 points in 33 matches (two starts) this past season, announced its plans on social media Monday. His brother, Senior Payton Sandfort, was bound for the team with 16.7 points per match.
“I want to thank coach McCaffery and the staff for being there for me every step on the road and gave me the opportunity to play for my home state,” Pryce Sandfort published in a statement. “It has been really special for the past two years to wear black and gold and share the court with my brother.”
The younger sand fort goes with two more others in Owen Freeman and Brock Harding, who have also entered the transfer portal. Freeman was also an average of 16.7 points in the last season, while Harding was also an average of 8.8 points.
Iowa finished 17-16 after a setback of 106-94 to Illinois on Thursday in the second round of the Big Ten tournament. McCaffery was thrown out after evaluated two technical fouls to argue with the officials.
According to an Iowa statement Friday, the university would start a national search for a new head coach immediately.
