Boston Red Sox racked up 16 hits and had seven multi-hit performances in a 13-9 home opening victory over St. Louis Cardinals on Friday afternoon.
Back-to-back home races by Trevor Story (2-for-5, three RBI) and Wilyer Abreu (3-for-5, two runs, two RBI) emphasized a five-run first inning. Boston made four more frames and held a three-run St. Louis-Rally in ninth to make a winner of Starter Walker Buehler (1-1).
Triston Casas (2-for-5, two runs) and Carlos Narvaez (2-for-3, two RBI) also had several hits and contributed to several runs while exciting Rookie Kristian Campbell did three times.
Red Sox tagged St. Louis starter Erick Fedde (1-1) for six runs on five hits and four walks in three rounds.
For St. Louis met Ivan Herrera his fourth Homer in the last two games while Brendan Donovan and Alec Burleson each had three hits.
Red Sox sent all nine to the plate during their five -run first. After Jarren Duran hit a lead single and Rafael Devers went, Bregman lined up a double in the corner of the left field to give Boston a 1-0 lead before the first one was made.
The story delivered a high three-run blast over the green monster, then Abreu hit the next pitch over the right field Bullpen for a solo home.
Boston added in the third. After Campbell went and recorded its first career -stolen bass, Narvaez beat an RBI single through the right.
After Brehler retired five of the first six he met, Victor Scott II drew a lead walk and scored on Lars Nootbar’s final-of-the-bat knock through the short stop hole in the third.
St. Louis crawled within 6-4 when three straight blowers reached and scored to start the fourth. After Nolan Arenado’s Wall-Ball Double and a Burleson single, Herrera’s shot cleared into the right-midfield Bullpen bases.
The fifth round started with back-to-back Buehler strikes before Donovan’s two-out shot on the right brought the cardinals within 6-5, but an Abreu RBI single and Campbell Sacrifice fly led home insurance under the host’s half.
After Donovan drove in his second run on a two-out single in seventh, Red Sox replied with another three-run. Ceddane Rafaela’s base-loaded Fielder Val started rally before Duran and Devers laced RBI singles.
In the eighth, Reliever Brennan Bernardino knocked out the page before Casas doubled and scored on Abreus Grounder for a lead of 12-6. Narvaez followed with an RBI double two strokes later.
St. Louis did not go silent when Willson Contreras and Donovan published RBI singles under a three-run, three-hit ninth. Herrera came to the plate when the binding run with the bases charged, but Boston closer to Aroldis Chapman got Herrera to the ground in a game -ending double play.
