Boston Red Sox right hand Liam Hendriks will open the season on the injured list due to elbow inflammation, which delays his return after the latest health problems that included cancer treatment and Tommy John surgery.
Hendriks, 36, made seven performances in spring training for Red Sox but was placed on IL among features to complete the opening day list before Thursday’s road game against Texas Rangers.
In 2023, Hendriks made a triumphant return to Chicago White Sox from an attack with non-Hodgkin lymphoma but after five excursions he was diagnosed with an elbow injury that required Tommy John operation. He missed the whole season in 2024.
Australia’s native signed a two-year, 10 million dollar agreement with Red Sox in February 2024, despite the injury.
A three-o’clock All-Star, Hendriks is 33-34 with a 3.82 era in 476 performances (44 starts) for five franchises since 2011.
In other Red Somovements to complete their 26-man list, the left-handers Chris Murphy and Zach Penrod were both placed on 60-day IL with elbow injuries, while Outfielder Masataka Yoshida was sent to 10-day IL after shoulder surgery during the low season.
The right-handers Lucas Giolito (hamstring), Brayan Bello (Axel) and cutter Crawford (knee) were all placed on 15-day IL. Right -handed Reliever Cooper Criswell, 28, was named Boston’s opening day list.
