San Antonio Spur’s head coach Gregg Popovich met the team on Thursday for the first time since his stroke and informed the players that he was not returning this season, reported the NBA enthusiast Chris Haynes.
ESPN reported last week that the team expected to end the campaign without Popovich, which suffered what Spurs called a mild stroke on November 2 only five matches into the season.
Interim coach Mitch Johnson has led Spurs to a 22-30 mark (24-33 in total) in the absence of Popovich, who has trained the team since the 1996-97 season and won five NBA championships.
Popovich’s plans for next season are unknown.
The winning coach in the NBA story turned 76 on January 28. Popovich owns a career record of 1,407-843 in 2,250 matches with Spurs. This year’s three times NBA coach was introduced in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame 2023.
