Atlanta Braves agreed to a smaller league contract with Catcher James McCann Per several media reports on Monday.

The 11-year-old veteran provides extra depth behind the plate, as Braves starter Sean Murphy opens the campaign on the damaged list with a cracked left Rib. Outside Murphy, Chadwick Tromp is the only Catcher on the team’s 40-man list.

Braves had two other veteran non-roster catchers in the camp, but they released Curt Casali on Monday, the same day as they assigned Sandy Leon to their smaller league camp. The season opening for Tromp can be either McCann or 23-year-old prospect Drake Baldwin.

During his career, McCann has played for Detroit Tigers, Chicago White Sox, New York Mets and Baltimore Orioles. He was an all-star for Chicago in 2019 and published 18 home races and 60 RBI with a .273 Slag average.

The 34-year-old has not really captured these heights, but he was a solid back stop for Orioles for the past two seasons. In 2024 he showed up in 65 matches and recorded eight home races and 31 RBI with a .234/.279/.388 slash.
