The first Baseman Yuli Gurriel, an important part of two World Series championship teams with Houston Astros, agreed on a smaller league contract with San Diego Padres, several media reported on Monday.

Gurriel will try to make Padre’s opening day list in spring training. If he ends up in Majors, he will reportedly earn $ 1.25 million with the opportunity to earn an additional $ 1 million in incentives.

If Gurriel is part of the San Diego squad, he expects to back up the first bass man Luis Arraez while receiving bats as the appointed hit.

The 40-year-old Cuban native spent most of the 2024 season with Atlanta Braves’ Triple-A Gwinnett-connected before he was acquired by Kansas City on August 31. In Major League games with Royals, he met .241 with a .338 base percentage, a .296 sluggish percentage, no homers and six rbi.

Gurriel was American League’s batting master (.319) in 2021, the same year he won a gold glove. He hit better than .300 during the 2017 and 2022 season when Astros won both championships.

Gurriel spent seven seasons in Houston (2016-22) before playing for Miami Marlin’s 2023. His best season when it comes to power generation was 2019, when he sued 31 homers and drove in 104 runs.

In 927 Career Games, Gurriel owns EN .280/.326/.438 Batting line with 98 home races and 468 RBI.
