Rodney Terry targeted Texas to the NCAA tournament for each of its three years as head coach, but it was reportedly enough to save his job.
Shortly after Longhorn’s lost 86-80 to Xavier in a first four match in Dayton, Ohio, on Wednesday, two media, Horns247 and the field 68, reported that Terry will be shot.
Texas (19-16) wasted with a 10-point second half lead against the musketeers and covered a season where Longhorns had a 6-12 record in the robust southeastern conference.
Terry owns a record of 62-37 as the head of Austin. He previously served as Longhorn’s assistant from 2002-03 to 2010-11 and again 2021-22. He got the best job on an interim base when Chris Beard was interrupted for an alleged home violence during the 2022-23 season, and Terry became permanent coach in March 2023 after the beard was fired.
When asked about his job status after the loss to Xavier, Terry said: “I have been in Texas 13 years, and there is not a year that I have not done the NCAA tournament or been part of the NCAA tournament. I have a lot of pride when it comes to being a longhorn.
“I love being in Texas. I don’t think anyone (who has) been part of Texas Basket has been more successful than myself. I have been part of the top five seasons in the program’s history. …
“Our guys get a lot of credit for having sat in a fantastic position to be here tonight. At the end of the day it is in God’s hands.”
Terry, 56, was head coach in Fresno State from 2011-12 to 2017-18, which led Bulldogs to an NCAA tournament appearance, and he led Utep from 2018-19 to 2020-21. In total, he owns a record of 225-193 as head coach.
