A crane of the lid or helmet has new meaning during 2025 spring training games.
In more than 55 percent of spring training games over the next six weeks, Major League Baseball uses the automated ball-strike system and gives each team two challenges with called balls or strikes in real time.
Reviews triggered by a batter, catcher or jug must be made immediately after the home plate judges call or signal ball or strike. Managers and players in Dugout cannot demand a review.
Once it has been prompted, the review is displayed, or a digitized replay that is common on broadcasts, for the referee and replicated on stadium video tables with Hawk-Eye technology. Viewers of broadcast flows will also see the same replay, according to MLB, who said its research revealed that a strike zone challenge has usually added 17 seconds to a game.
When used during smaller league matches in 2024, 51 percent of the game -authorized challenges were successful, which means that the original ball or strike call was turned.
ABS uses exact measurements-home plate 17 inches wide, the top of the strike zone 53 percent of a batter’s height, the bottom of the zone is 23 percent of a batter’s height-to put over a laser-like digitized strike zone in a not- for-Broadcast tracker on each pitch . When a challenge is granted, the replay of Tracker is immediately displayed.
Biomechanical analysis of the measurements of team height was confirmed by the Southwest Research Institute to give the exact player’s dimensions with a goal of an exact uniform strike zone for each batter. The depth of the zone, often the source of questioning balls and strikes at speed and break locations, is flat and uniform for each batter: 8.5 inches from the front and back of the plate.
The system was used in Independent Atlantic League 2019. As of 2023, most triple-A stadiums were equipped with the technology for entire automated balls and strikes, or Robo UMPS, and the ABS challenge system MLB chose to try this spring.
The root systems for the technology are widely known for the application within Statcast products for tracking ball flight, pitch, type and speed, bat rate, exit speed and distance a beaten ball travels.
The ABS Challenge system will also be used in the smaller leagues in 2025. There is no plan to quickly accept the challenges for ball strike calls for the regular season 2025 MLB.
Unless MLB adds technology during spring training, there are 13 ball parks equipped with the necessary technology and video mandatory pairs to participate in Challenge System Trial and 10 websites that will not be involved.
In Grapefruit League, these Florida Spring training places plan to use the challenge system: TD Ballpark (Blue Jays), Baycare Ballpark (Phillies), George M. Steinbrenner Field (Yankees), Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium (Tigers), Lecom Park (Pirates Park. Stadium (twins), Clover Park (Mets) and Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium (Cardinals and Marlins).
In Arizona, Cactus League sites that are ready for ball-strike challenges Peoria Sports Complex (Padres, Mariners) Salt River Fields (Diamondbacks, Rockies), Camelback Ranch (Dodgers, White Sox), Surprise Stadium (Royals, Royals) and GoDearnar) and GoDear) and GoDearnaar) and goody (Guardians, reds).
