Team US defender Charlie McAvoy was taken into Mass General Hospital on Monday evening with an infection that originated from a previous upper body injury, according to several reports Tuesday.

McAvoy, who plays for Boston Bruins, was a central figure in 4 nations face-off win for Team USA over Team Canada on Saturday. He had left shoulder operation in 2022.

McAvoy is the son-in-law of Team US head coach Mike Sullivan and serves as assistant captain on the 4 nation list. He missed seven matches in January with an upper body injury and returned to action on January 30.

His status of Thursday’s final, an re -match between the North American countries, will be set on Wednesday, according to TSN. Bruins were expected to issue an update of McAvoy after all tests were completed.

McAvoy, 27, delivered a teeth-screaming check on Team Canadas Connor McDavid, which set the tone in Team US victory.

He was out of the set on Monday with Auston Matthews and Matthew Tkachuk. Tkachuck (lower bodily injury) was injured against Team Canada and Matthews (upper body tenderness) is expected to play Thursday. Team USA lost to Sweden, 2-1, and lost Matthew Tkachuck to a lower bodily injury during the first period.

“I would foresee that we would (get players back Thursday),” Sullivan said Monday night. “We have to wait and see how things play here the next day or so, but obviously there will be emergency planning in the event that we need people.”

Against Sweden, Brady left Tkachuk during the first period after he crashed into a net cheese.

“Brady obviously had a lower bodily injury,” Sullivan said Monday night. “We kept him more for precautionary reasons at that point. I have not received an update to this point after the match yet, so we will see how he answers. But I do not anticipate that it is a problem.”
